Chapter 8
Back Up, Store, and Share Files
Although backup and online storage might not have the same appeal as streaming movies, games, and
photos, the same omnipresent iCloud connection they rely on among all your devices can make a real
difference to how you work and keep organized. It also makes life a lot easier when performing basic
functions like printing and sharing files among computers or with friends and family.
Back Up via iCloud
iCloud backup is available for any iOS device running iOS 5 or later with an iCloud account. With
iCloud backup enabled, your device will automatically back up important information to the iCloud
servers each day, and you can restore your device from that backup at any time. It also means that,
should you replace your current device, you can restore the new device using the iCloud backup. This,
of course, negates the requirement for your device to ever have to be connected directly to a computer
to use iTunes for backup.
You can use either iCloud backup or the traditional iTunes backup method — but not both — to
automatically back up your important information, such as your camera roll in the Photos App, your
account settings, the contents of your apps, and iCloud documents. All your iTunes Store purchases,
including books, movies, music, TV shows, and apps, are backed up, with an infinite amount of space
available for them. Both iCloud backup and iTunes backup save all those files, but only iTunes backup
saves media files that you didn't buy through the iTunes Store.
You can turn iCloud backup on directly from the device you want to use it with, as Figure 8-1
shows, or select iCloud backup in iTunes for your device, as Figure 8-2 shows. iCloud backup runs
when your device is locked, has a Wi-Fi Internet connection, and is connected to a power source. You
can manually start a backup to iCloud by going to the Settings app's iCloud pane, tapping Storage &
Backup, and then tapping Back Up Now.
Even if you use iCloud backup, you can still manually back up to your computer.
