In-Depth Information
you use more than one browser, it becomes hard to keep your bookmarks in sync: Which browser has
which bookmarks?
And iCloud bookmark syncing only syncs the bookmarks stored in Safari (or Internet Explorer on
a Windows PC, if you set it to do so).
Fortunately, there is a way to sync your bookmarks across the major browsers: Xmarks Book-
mark Sync ( www.xmarks.com ) . It syncs bookmarks in Firefox (in Windows, OS X, and Linux), Safari
(in OS X only), Internet Explorer (a Windows-only browser), and Chrome (in Windows, OS X, and
Linux). You sign up for an account and then install the free Xmarks plug-in for each browser you
have, on each computer you have. The Xmarks service then syncs the bookmarks across the browsers
— just keep in mind that its not as fast as iCloud is, so be patient. Then, iCloud will sync the book-
marks from Safari on your Mac or Internet Explorer on your PC to your iOS devices. Or you can buy
the $12 annual service, which adds support for various mobile devices (including iOS) and an iCloud
Tabs-like capability. The only issue with Xmarks is that it does not work with Safari for Windows, so
if that's the browser you sync to iOS devices with, you're out of luck.
Create a Reading List for access anywhere on any device
iCloud's Safari syncing also syncs your Reading List bookmarks. The Reading List holds the links
you tagged to read later. With iCloud, you can read them on any connected devices. Even better,
Reading List stores full web pages so, even if you don't have an Internet connection, you can view the
page. Once you've read a page stored in the Reading List, it is removed, so you only see bookmarks to
what you haven't yet read. (Use regular bookmarks instead for links you want to return to time and
again.)
You access the Reading List by clicking the Reading List button ( ) in Safari on a com-
puter and from the Bookmarks screen or pop-over on an iOS device. On an iPad's Bookmarks pop-
over, tap the Reading List button ( ) at the bottom of the pop-over to see a list of your Read-
ing List bookmarks. On an iPhone or iPod Touch, tap the Reading List folder at the top of the Book-
marks screen to see the list of saved items.
NOTE: When you're using a cellular connection to access the Internet, such as from your
iPhone, the Reading List may not synchronize. If not, cellular syncing is probably disabled on your
device to reduce your data usage. You can turn it on in the Settings app's Safari pane via the Use Cel-
lular Data switch.
To add a link to the Reading List, click or tap the Share button ( ) in Safari, then choose Add
to Reading List from the menu (on a computer) or pop-over (on an iOS device) that appears.
Access open tabs in Safari on any device with iCloud Tabs
iCloud Tabs (see Figure 7-21) is a simple and incredibly handy feature. Click the iCloud Tabs but-
ton (
) in Safari on a computer or the iPad to get a list of currently and recently open web pages
on your other iOS devices. On an iPhone or iPod Touch, tap the Bookmarks button (
) and then
tap iCloud Tabs in the screen that appears to see that list.
