Translate Foreign Languages
When you're in a foreign country, an iOS device can be indispensable for conversing with
locals and understanding signs and directions. Two of the most incredible, almost magic apps
I've come across can help in this situation.
The first is called iTranslate Voice, shown at right. Available for $0.99, Sonico's iTranslate
Voice and iTranslate Voice HD for iPad listens to what you say and translates it to a foreign lan-
guage in both text and audio forms. Not only is this handy when trying the right phrasing
abroad, it's also a great learning tool to help you perfect your pronunciation and pick up vocab-
ulary. A range of languages are available including Spanish, French, Italian, and Portuguese
and you can switch the translation direction at any time to help you understand what you're
saying or what you're being asked.
The second magical language app I've used on a regular basis is Word Lens by Quest Visu-
al, an app that has to be seen to be believed. Simply hold your iPhone up to a sign, menu, or any
text written in a supported language and the text is translated into English. The app even tries
to retain the original font for complete clarity. Language packs for French, Spanish, English,
and Italian cost $4.99 each.
