on a Windows RT device.) If your PC doesn't have the iCloud control panel, you can install it
from Apple's website at www.icloud.com/icloudcontrolpanel .
2. If your name and e-mail address are listed in the iCloud control panel, you have an iCloud
account linked to your computer.
If iCloud doesn't appear to be running on your computer or iOS device, you can run through a
couple more checks to make sure you didn't create an account at any stage. First, search all your e-
mail accounts for any confirmation of an iCloud account creation from Apple. Finally, visit
www.icloud.com and enter the e-mail address and password you are most likely to have used with
iCloud. If you still come up with nothing, it's safe to say that you're unlikely to have an iCloud ac-
count running.
If that's the case, step right this way to set one up.
Set Up iCloud on All Your Devices
There are several ways to set up a new iCloud account, be it on a brand-new iOS device, an exist-
ing device, or on a Mac. PC users are required to set up iCloud on an iOS device or a Mac first, before
adding the account to their PC using the iCloud control panel. Once you have set up iCloud on one
device, you can simply add that account to your other devices without going through the setup pro-
cess again. Choose one of the options below to create an iCloud account.
On a new iOS device
When you first turn on a brand-new iOS device, you have the option to set up an iCloud account
as you go. This option appears as part of the iOS setup process, and you can also log in to an existing
iCloud account if you want.
1. Turn on your new iOS device and swipe across the screen to begin the installation process.
Follow the steps until you reach the Set Up screen in the next step.
2. Select the set up options (Set Up as New iPhone or Set Up as New iPad is probably best for
most users) and tap the Next button.
3. Tap the Create a Free Apple ID button (shown in Figure 1-5).
4. Use the selection wheel at the bottom of the screen to select your birthday, then tap the Next
button.
5. Enter your first name and last name in the fields that appear, then tap the Next button.
6. The next screen allows you to use a current e-mail address or get a free iCloud e-mail ad-
dress. You can also change an existing e-mail address if required. Tap Get a Free iCloud
Email Address and then tap Next.
7. Enter the first part of the e-mail address you want to use (before the @ symbol) and tap
Next. Tap Create on the alert window that appears if you're happy with your e-mail address.
8. Enter a new password for your account and verify it in the second field, then tap the Next
button.
9. Select a security question and answer, then tap the Next button.
10. Agree to the terms and conditions document by tapping the Agree button. Your new Apple
ID is now created.
11. Tap the Use iCloud button to enable iCloud on this device (see Figure 1-6). Tap the Next
button to continue.
