E-mail Wherever You Are
Making sure you have access to e-mail is always important. Using iCloud or several other e-mail
services, you can keep your e-mail accounts in sync and available across all your devices. iCloud e-
mail should be up and running already if you set up your iOS device with an iCloud account but, if
not, it's quick and easy to add your iCloud e-mail to an iOS device, Mac, or PC, or to access it online.
PC users need to be using Microsoft Outlook 2007 or later to access iCloud e-mail or, alternatively,
they can access their mail through a browser by visiting iCloud.com.
You might wonder what the big deal is about keeping e-mail up to date on multiple devices —
“isn't that how it works?” you may be asking. The answer is “yes, sometimes.” Corporate e-mail sys-
tems like Microsoft Exchange do in fact sync e-mail across all devices, so a message deleted on one is
deleted on all, and a message read on one is still available to all others. Folders are kept synced, too.
And some personal e-mail accounts do the same, if they use a protocol called IMAP. But many of the
e-mail services you get from your Internet service provider or other free sources use a protocol called
POP that doesn't sync e-mail across multiple devices (nor support folders) — that's a recipe for e-mail
confusion.
