Turning on FaceTime in the Settings app
On a Mac:
1. Launch the FaceTime application.
2. If you're not already signed in, your Apple ID is filled in but you need to enter your pass-
word in the field that displays and then click Sign In. You can also enter a different Apple ID
and password to sign in from a different account. Click Create New Account if you don't
already have an Apple ID.
TIP: If you or your friends use a Windows PC, Android device, or Windows Phone, you can't use
FaceTime to video-chat — it's an Apple-only technology. So you should use the free Skype service in-
stead, as it is available for Mac, Windows, iOS, Windows Phone, and Android.
Use Skype as Your Universal Phone
You can use Skype (shown in Figure 6-5) as your main communication method across all your
devices. The service isn't limited to just Skype-to-Skype calls, either. For an additional fee, you can
use Skype to have calls with people's landline and cellular phones. If you call foreign numbers regu-
larly, using Skype could be cheaper than a standard landline or cellular contract. With its paid service
options, Skype can be used just like a regular phone with the added benefit that the same number can
be used wherever you are. Just be aware that you can't call emergency numbers such as 911 or 999.
