about 6 to 10 weeks, all the workers in their colonies were their of spring.
We then evaluated 38 colonies for the amount of stored pollen and as-
signed the colony phenotype to the father of the colony. We assumed that
because the queens were all super sisters derived from a breeding pro-
gram with strong selection, they were fairly uniform for genes that
af ected the pollen-hoarding trait. h ey shared more than 87 percent of
their genes in common. h erefore, the majority of the heritable varia-
tion we observed among colonies was due to the ef ect of the genetic
contributions of the fathers.
