A Capsule History
The original inhabitants of these islands, the
peaceful Arawak Indians , were conquered by
the fierce Carib tribe . Columbus , on his sec-
ond voyage, sighted the east point of St. Croix,
which he claimed for Spain and named Santa Cruz (Holy
Cross). Coming ashore at Salt River (north side), he and his
men were promptly attacked by the Caribs and fled. Con-
