Unless the collector is extended into a transfer diaphragm, it would have to extend
the full depth of the diaphragm. The figure provides a possible solution for the cre-
ation of the collector. The floor framing members are assumed to be open web joists.
Solid blocking is installed between the top chords of the joists. The diaphragm sheath-
ing is nailed to the blocking with special nailing. Multiple 2× members are installed
below the top chords to act as the continuous collector. The collector can be nailed
directly to the blocking or can have shear clips installed to transfer the shears from
the blocking into the collector. The joints in the collector are spliced with tie straps,
