Example 10.4: Cantilever Method, Double Opening
The wall shown in Fig. 10.19 has a height of 8 ft and a length of 23 ft. The sill section on
the left has a height of 3 ft. The sill section on the right has a height of 5 ft. A 5 ft high by
4 ft wide opening and a 3 ft high by 6 ft wide opening are placed in the wall as shown
in the figure. The sections above the opening do not comply with the allowable shear
wall aspect ratios and therefore will not be used. Gravity loads will be ignored. A 5000 lb
lateral force is applied at the top of the wall and is distributed to each pier in accordance
with its respective length. A partial-length collector will be used at the right pier.
