cantilevers. The uniform load applied to the diaphragm can be broken down into unit
loads that are proportional to the diaphragm section depths, as shown in the figure. The
load diagram for each transfer diaphragm is shown in Fig. 6.16. The transfer diaphragm
layout provides an opportunity to include an opening or recess in the diaphragm, as
shown at the right of the figure. However, for loading in the transverse direction, this
would create a diaphragm with an intermediate notch, which was covered in Chap. 4.
Figure 6.17 shows a floor plan layout typically used for apartment complexes.
Under longitudinal loading, three shear wall arrangements are commonly used.
• Shear walls are placed at grid lines 1, 2, 3, and 4 (most common).
• Shear walls are placed at grid lines 1 and 4 only.
• Shear walls are placed at grid lines 2 and 3 only.
