Example 6.3: Cantilever Diaphragm, Full-Length Collector at Interior Shear Wall
The diaphragm shown in Fig. 6.12 has a length of 30 ft and a depth of 60 ft. A 12 ft shear
wall is located along grid line 2, as shown. The location of the interior wall line creates a
20 ft back span with a 10 ft cantilever. The 10 ft cantilever is obviously less than 25 ft and
is also less than 2/3 (60) = 40 ft, which meets code limitations. The diaphragm acts as a
propped cantilever beam, when loaded in the longitudinal direction, and therefore does
not have a torsional moment that would apply forces at grid lines A and B. The boundary
members along grid lines A and B act as standard chord members. A full-length collector
is installed at grid line 2. The wall at grid line 3 is an open front of solid glass. A uniform
load of 200 plf is applied to the diaphragm as shown in the figure.
