In-Depth Information
fine-tuning is going on under the collaboration of ICAR, RCER, R and
thematic unit of PRADAN on this water-harvesting model (Jal Kunda).
OUTCOME OF COLLABORATION
As a result of these overall activities, the farmers from Gumla district
could sell mangoes worth Rs. 4.00 lakh during 2009-2010. In 2010-2011,
the sale of mango from the region reached Rs. 14.00 lakh and during
2011-2012, the sale reached Rs. 24.00 lakh. At least five to six times in-
come generation has taken place by the farmers from mango in the differ-
ent location of PRADAN within 2-3 years. At present, this handholding
has increased the confidence level of staffs of PRADAN for establishment
of mango based production system in tribal region of Eastern plateau and
hill region.
LEARNING FROM THE OVERALL PROCESS
Both of the agencies consider thoughts and realization of farmers as scope
of development of own learning cluster. From the very beginning both
agencies tried to document the farmers' response in each & every steps of
intervention. Intercropping as an effective means of winter protection of
young mango plants, use of polythene lined rain water harvesting struc-
tures for storage of water from streams to be used during summer season
were some of the learning experience for ICAR RCER, RC, Ranchi out of
this hand holding. Marked difference in the growth of plants where fruit-
ing was taken up during the third year and during the fourth year was an
interesting observation on the part of scientists. Unsuitability of highly
degraded soil for growing mango plants was also a learning experience for
the scientists of ICAR RCER.
Every observation and learning created a new scope of development.
Unsuitability of mango in highly degraded soil now is creating a new
scope of thinking of other fruit options for these specific regions. To make
the product more marketable, now joint venture of ICAR, RCER, R and
PRADAN is being undertaken on value chain exploration and technical up
gradation in post harvest management of mango.
Hence, the program was a collaborative effort of ICAR RCER, Re-
search Centre, Ranchi and NGO like PRADAN. The role played by ICAR
