FIGURE 8.2 Principles of strategic planning to combat with challenges of climate
change using integrated management inputs.
India has a network of rivers that cover large area under agriculture.
Flood may often be disastrous. In order to sustain agriculture as well as
maintenance of perennial rivers like Ganga, Kosi, Brahamputra, Gandak,
Ghaghra and Mahananda in Bihar, a pilot trial may be undertaken to make
ridges on both sides of the river banks followed by planting of agro-forest-
ry (with high photosynthetic demand) and construction of highways and
railways. The maintenance of railways, highways and agro-forestry would
facilitate the maintenance of river-bank embankment and flood manage-
ment in a big way.
8.4 CONCLUSION
The global climate change is a challenging task to be tackled not in isola-
tion, but through integrated efforts, in which a high level global scientific
team may be involved from all specialized sectors covering all spectra of
interest. The challenges with global climate change are both natural as
well as man-made. Natural consequences may be handled by gathering
scientific know-how, whereas man-made impacts are manageable with
participatory commitments in a planned way on site-specific basis. The
past may entail the issues, while present will scrutinize the challenges and
