In-Depth Information
Presently, around 81% of vegetable production in islands is harvested dur-
ing dry season, that is, from December to April. Around 700 ha upland
area is used for vegetable cultivation in rainy season. The most signifi-
cant reasons are water stagnation in low lands and lack of suitable veg-
etable crops and varieties, which can tolerate water logging. The expected
sea level rise may extend the water-logging situation from present period
(May to December) to future (May to February). Even small reduction in
growing period will have serious impact on selection of vegetables. Thus,
sincere efforts were required to identify suitable crops, which are locally
adaptive and can tolerate excess rains and stagnant water.
