In-Depth Information
mitigating the ill effects of climate change and seasonal variability. There
is need to promote growers/farmers to develop warning system through
use of proper technologies, that too strategically in congruence with fu-
ture climate change. Capacity building in surveillance, prevention, control
and diagnosis of diseases in systematic manner is very much required. To
develop database of litchi growers and litchi growing condition at region
specific basis. There is also need to develop knowledge and understanding
about the effect of climate change and seasonal variation on litchi pro-
duction and productivity, as this fruit crop is very responsive to climate
change conditions. It is urgently required to have farmers/grower and sci-
entists involvement for this concern to manage its ill effects by suitable
and possible processes and practices. To make policy support, strategic
plan and implement specific measures to combat climate change in wider
perspective, human resource development by proper training is required
and also to undertake action research and extension activities to address is-
sues such as poor soil, irrigation and limited resource base efficient utiliza-
tion. The technological interventions through developing the demonstra-
tion plot in major growing areas to develop knowledge for better adoption
of technologies.
6.3.3 CLIMATIC EVENTS FOREWARNING/FORECASTING
Making forecasts relevant to litchi production system, with focused invest-
ment and infrastructural development have supported the litchi production
more pronounced and responsive. The complex interactions that govern
the population dynamics and proliferation of invasive species, pests and
disease make it extremely difficult for scientists to predict the extent of
damage of litchi production under climate changed condition. As in case
of warmer climate and changed rainfall pattern resulting frequent and un-
desirable flushing, litchi crop will become stressed and may be more sus-
ceptible to pest and disease outbreaks disturbing the economic viability.
The recent developed climate ready technologies consisting of crops with
specific traits such as drought, salt tolerance, management of agronomic
practices, temperature variations, occurrence of rainfall, etc., can be suit-
ably managed. It is required to properly exploit the developed forecast sys-
tem as efficient and early warning system for successful litchi production.
