which determines optimum moisture content and maximum dry unit
weight of the soil that is to be used for fill material. Chapter 13 discusses
the method for rapid evaluation of moisture content. Chapters 14, 15,
and 16 cover three methods of finding the in-place dry unit weight of
soil, which in turn is used to determine whether and when the labora-
tory maximum dry unit weight (or an acceptable percentage thereof )
has been achieved in the field.
