Normally, the results of each grain-size analysis of soil are reported in
the form of a grain-size distribution curve (Figure 10-4). As an alterna-
tive, the analysis may be reported in tabular form, giving percentages
passing various sieve sizes or percentages found within various parti-
cle-size ranges.
As indicated previously, grain-size analysis is widely used in the
identification and classification of soils. It is also utilized in part of the
specifications of soil for airfields, roads, earth dams, and other soil em-
bankment construction. Additionally, the frost susceptibility of soils can
be fairly accurately predicted from the results of this analysis.
