In-Depth Information
of the time: if you want to fly at a particularly popular time of year (eg over the Christmas
period), book well in advance.
The high season for flights into NZ is during summer (December to February), with
slightly less of a premium on fares over the shoulder months (October/November and
March/April). The low season generally tallies with the winter months (June to August),
though this is still a busy time for airlines ferrying ski bunnies and powder hounds.
DEPARTURE TAX
An international departure tax of NZ$25 applies when leaving three of NZ's smaller
international airports: Hamilton, Rotorua and the sporadically international
Palmerston North. At all other airports the tax has been replaced with a NZ$12.50
Passenger Service Charge (PSC), which is included in your ticket price. At
Hamilton, Rotorua and Palmerston North, departure tax must be paid separately at
the airport before you board your flight (via credit card or cash). For kids under 12
it's NZ$10, and free for kids under two.
