Conclusions
Due to the biomagnification process, piglet tissues (including neural tissues) can be
enriched with n-3 long chain PUFA (EPA and DHA) by supplementing the maternal diet
with n-3 FA. Omega FA and CLA could be used to improve the FA profiles of sows and
the growth of their offspring. Moreover, the immune-modulating activity of n-3 FA and
CLA might improve health and welfare of piglets during neonatal, pre- and post-weaning
periods when sows are fed n-3 FA and CLA during gestation and lactation. However,
more work needs to be done to establish the optimal level of supplementation with CLA
or omega FA, as well as the ideal duration of supplementation needed in order to obtain
the most beneficial outcomes.
