combination of such graphic logs and detailed field sketches are often required,
as the range of layering and other features can be on a variety of scales (for
example, Figures 8.4 and 8.7).
In describing layered rocks, large-scale repetition of particular types of lay-
ering may be observed. Such repetition is usually conspicuous, involving the
systematic recurrence of distinctive layers or sequences of the same kind of
