This chapter provides an overview of today's state-of-the-art in standardization of automotive soft-
ware infrastructures. he chapter is structured as follows: Section . provides short overview of the
automotive hardware architecture. Section . provides information on the software modules speci-
fied by the German working groups OSEK/VDX. Section . describes the sotware modules defined
by the HIS group. Section . illustrates the software modules standardized by the International
Organization for Standardization (ISO). Section . deals with the AUTOSAR initiative. Section .
focuses on the Japanese counterpart to AUTOSAR named JasPar, and Section . provides a short
summary, concluding the chapter.
18.2 Hardware Architecture
The hardware architecture of automotive systems can be viewed at different levels of abstraction.
On the highest level of abstraction, the “system level,” an automotive system consists of a number
of networks interconnected via gateways (see Figure .). In general, these networks correspond to
the different functional domains that can be found in today's cars (i.e., chassis domain, power train
domain, body domain).
The networks themselves comprise a number of electronic control units (ECUs), which are inter-
connected via a communication media (see zoom-in on network A and D in Figure .). .).The physical
