In-Depth Information
If you will work and write at a computer, you will probably want a small reading desk lamp
next to your keyboard. This will enable you to make notes and write without straining your
eyes or having to move to another part of the room.
LED lighting is clear and offers bright light, so it makes a great choice for homeor
commercial-office lighting. It makes tasks such as reading and writing easier by throwing
a strong light just where you need it. You may want to look into dimming switches too, as
these bulbs can be dimmed as needed for when the natural lighting in the room changes
from day to night. LED home lighting is a great advancement over traditional incandescent
lights and it's becoming more popular. While a traditional incandescent bulb will light a
room but burn out relatively quickly, a LED light works differently. The longer life of an
LED bulb means less money spent on replacing bulbs, and it's more energy-efficient than
a traditional incandescent light bulb, which equates to lower costs in the long run.
There is a huge market out there for the “home office” businessperson, with many tempta-
tions. Just remember that if you don't need it, don't purchase it. Sure, there are fancy print-
er/scanner/fax machines out there and I certainly agree that you're going to need one, but
opt for a simple model, even a used model, until your business justifies the purchase of a
new one. A business can get started on the right foot by not overspending to make your
new office too extravagant.
A Technician Space
The technician space is one of my favorite spaces in my business. The technician space is
simple. A drafting table, a garage shop table, or other sturdy solid-top table would work
well. Aside from my personal desk, the technician space is where all of the magic happens.
When I flip on the lights at my business, I love seeing the technician's spaces light up. It's
like the heart of the business starts beating. When the tech space is full of devices for re-
pair, you'll know that you're doing something right.
As with your desk space, probably one of the biggest necessities here is good lighting. As
a technician working on computers or other small devices, you're constantly focusing and
adjusting to different lighting scenarios. Lighting that is directly overhead, even just above
your head, is good.
All of that good lighting is going to be shining down on the work surface. Just about any
flat, desk-like surface is good as long as it's clean and stable. It should be covered with
an ESD (electrostatic discharge) mat. Not only do you want to properly prepare for ESD
issues but also the matting is a runner-like material that is nonabrasive and a good cushion
for your sensitive electronics.
