What You Need in Your Home Workspace
Remember, this is your office, the start to your very own business. Make it perfect. Make it
exactly what you need in order to facilitate your very best decision making, customer ser-
vice, and professional repairs. This space will look different for every business owner and
will change over time. In the last handful of years, my office space has been modified half
a dozen times. This change comes from the way I, and my business, have evolved. Growth
can be a tricky thing. My advice: Continually prepare for it all of time. The first aspect this
growth will affect is your office space.
Organization is key. You will find that there are certain materials and tools that you need all
the time that should be at your fingertips. Other things you will need only once in a while.
Organize these things. You will also find that you need space to spread out and complete
each of the individual tasks that your home-based business will require of you. Identify and
organize these spaces, too. What tools do you need at each “station”? Have you taken the
necessary precautions to keep yourself, as well as the devices, safe and well cared for?
Yes, it's a lot to think about and prepare for. But remember, you are not alone. This section
will guide you through the setup of your home office and provide you with questions to
ponder and tips to help you look and feel successful. In addition, as you travel this journey
of starting up your own homebased business, rest assured that you will find what works
best for you and you will feel empowered to change the things that need to be changed to
best fit your business and your mission.
The Perfect Space
I started my business on my kitchen table. Literally. That was a mistake. It seemed like
a good place—it was large enough for a computer, my “to-do” checklist, my plans, and
a telephone. However, I quickly realized how often my family used the kitchen table for
everyday tasks. So much so that I needed to get away from the disruption of sliding my
stuff around so that my kids could eat their cereal. It was a necessary move.
It was apparent to me that I needed a dedicated space for my business to operate, not a
temporary space. So I broke this task up into two parts. I set a goal to have a dedicated
home-based space. Then I set a goal to lease a completely new space, a commercial space,
within six months of my grand opening.
The Home Space
The home space can be a tricky one, but it's going to be necessary to keep your sanity and
keep your business organized. Ideally, you'll have an extra bedroom or an office room that
