In-Depth Information
No one likes a pushy salesperson, and I've never sold an item that I didn't think a customer
really needed. Up-sells and cross-sells should be recommendations and not be forced on
consumers. They sell themselves.
Here are a few appropriate phrases you can use on your website or in your sales pitches:
n Use “popular items” or “hot products” to show the items most popular among shoppers.
n Use “customers also bought” to highlight items that other people bought.
n Phrases such as “you might like” gives the power and choice to decide back to the users
without imposing.
Cross-selling is relatively straightforward. Doing it well means that you'll not only sell
more items, but you will also keep customers coming back to your site again and again.
As you learn to cross-sell, maintain an inventory of new, warrantable products. You'll gain
the ability to offer promotions and suggest items to customers who otherwise might need
to visit a different business to make these purchases. Your goal is to keep the business in
your control and in your store.
Selling Refurbished Inventory
Why even talk about refurbished inventory? Who wants to by a “used” anything? While
this may be true for bathing suits (yuck!) there is a huge market for refurbished items and
your new computer repair business is poised perfectly for this. Let's face it. The computer
repair industry is the business of refurbishing. Once you repair a customer's computer, it's
refurbished.
The definition from Merriam-Webster:
re·fur·bish
(tr) to brighten or freshen up: RENOVATE
So since you're in the business of refurbishing devices for customers, this puts you in the
perfect spot to be the expert on selling refurbished products. Making extra money selling
used items isn't new. But selling refurbished products can be a fun way to create a lucrative
additional component to your business without having to come up with the capital that it
takes to buy a stock of new items.
What's more, you could easily find a plethora of damaged and otherwise “junk” items on
auctions sites like eBay for you to repair. Since you're repairing and refurbishing damaged
or broken products, you're able to buy them at a small fraction of their worth when re-
paired. These low product costs make refurbishing and selling previously damaged goods
one of the most profitable ways to make money with online or offline sales.
