North of Suzhou Creek

orth from the Bund, you enter Hongkou , an area that, before World
War II, was the Japanese quarter of the International Settlement. Since
1949 it has been largely taken over by housing developments, but
though it may seem grey and undistinguished - you certainly won't
find any celebrity restaurants - it's a charming, rather homely neighbourhood.
The two obvious focuses of interest are the pretty Duolun Culture Street
and nearby art gallery, and Lu Xun Park , around which are scattered several
memorials dedicated to the political novelist Lu Xun. Both areas are within
easy walking distance of each other so it's a good place to come on a sunny
afternoon for a stroll, a mooch around the shops and a coffee. Tourists don't
get out here much but it's popular with locals, and lively at weekends. If you
like your scenic spots uncrowded, come during the week.
The easiest way to get here is to get the light rail line #3 to Dongbaoxing
Lu or Hongkou Stadium. You'll probably have to change at Shanghai
Railway Station; it's a five-minute walk (signposted) between the two
stations, and note that your ticket, whatever it might say, is not valid for the
continuing journey. Bus #21 runs to Duolun Lu from Sichuan Zhong Lu,
behind the Bund.
