, the main artery of

ing'a
f , the district in the northwest
of the centre, was once known to “Shanghailanders” - the Europeans
who made their homes here - as Bubbling Well Road after a spring
that used to gush at the far end of the street. Then, as now, it was one
of the smartest addresses in the city, where Westerners' mock-Tudor mansions
shelter behind high walls. Today the area is notable for its grand, exclusive
hotels
and ultra modern
malls
, but in amongst all the luxury it also offers
some earthier and much cheaper attractions, in the form of the
fake market
and
Wujiang Lu Food Street
. Unexpectedly, and in counterpoint to the
rampant commercialism that surrounds them, Jing'an is also host to two of the
city's few notable places of worship:
Jing'an
and
Yufo temples
, both surpris-
ingly busy with devotees. And lastly, in the north of the area close to Suzhou
Creek, is the
Moganshan Art District
, an outpost of bohemianism that has
become one of the city's highlights - with dozens of art galleries and studios
to explore, you'll certainly find something to like.
