In-Depth Information
If you head west out of the bazaar (past all the construction work) you will
soon find yourself in some gritty
alleyways
- the real old town, if you like. It's
being torn down at a fearsome rate, but hopefully there will still be a few streets
left by the time you read this. Crossing Henan Nan Lu brings you to the most
interestingly ramshackle street,
Dajing Lu
, where you'll likely come across
ducks being killed and plucked, laundry and cured meat hung up on the same
lines, and plenty of hole-in-the-wall restaurants with their fare - crabs, toads,
shrimps and the like - crawling around plastic tubs outside. Look behind you
for a great Shanghai snapshot, the Jinmao Tower rising over the shabby street
like a mirage - very
Blade Runner
.
