Visitor activity centres on the tourist Yu yuan Bazaar and the attached Yu
Gardens , but there are also a few charming temples sunk into the alleyways .
Heading west, you abruptly re-enter the modern city when you hit Huaihai
Dong Lu . Not far from here you'll find the shabby but intriguing Dongtai Lu
Antique Market (see p.139), worth a mooch even if you're not into buying, and
from here you can walk to swanky Huaihai Lu, Xintiandi and Taikang Lu Art
Street, all covered in the next chapter.
Yuyuan Bazaar and Yu Gardens
TheYu Gardens lie at the centre of a touristy bazaar of narrow lanes lined with
souvenir shops, all new but built in a style of architectural chinoiserie. Some
might complain that it looks like Disneyland but Chinese tourists love it, and it
