High hopes:
Shanghai's building boom
Since the early 1990s Shanghai has been growing faster than
anywhere else in the world, ever - at one point, a quarter of
the world's cranes were in use here. In the rush to globalize,
the city has become something of a construction free-for-
all, a playground for some of the most celebrated names in
architecture. The result has been some of the world's most
ambitious building projects - from spectacular high-rises to
brand-new futuristic cities.
