The Bund and
Nanjing Dong Lu
S
hanghai's signature skyline, and the first stop for any visitor, is the
Bund , a strip of grand colonial edifices on the west bank of the
Huangpu River, facing the flashy skyscrapers of Pudong on the
opposite shore. The product of the city's commercial frenzy at the
beginning of the twentieth century, this was where the great trading houses
and banks built their headquarters, each trying to outdo the last in the pomp
of their edifices. Today it's the most exclusive chunk of real estate in China,
with pretensions to becoming the nation's Champs-Elysées; the world's most
luxurious brands have recently set up shop, and there are a clutch of celebrity
restaurants and some rather good hotels.
Having strolled the length of the Bund and soaked up some history, visitors
can get a first taste of the frantic pace of Shanghai's modern consumerism on
the roads that lead from it back towards People's Square - Nanjing Dong Lu
and Fuzhou Lu .
