is the best hotel on the island, with prices to
match. Furniture in the classier rooms and
the dining areas is in traditional Chinese
style. 6
Putuo Shanzhuang Just south of the Sansh-
engtang
main building, a converted ancient
monastery overhung by giant trees, but
can use the small annexe across the
street, where the rooms are comfortable
enough, if slightly cramped. The genteel
owner speaks no English but is always
helpful. 6

beautiful, relatively isolated and extremely

jetty to town, this is just a couple of
minutes due south of the centre along a
small path. Though the rooms themselves
are unremarkable, this is quite an attractive
place, styled like a temple. Note though
that they have an irritating habit of
attempting to surcharge foreigners by fifty
percent. 4

past Puji Temple to its eastern end,
through an arch, then turn left (north) up
the first alley. The alley first bends slightly
to the right, then seriously to the left (the
hotel is actually directly behind Puji Si).

The island
The main temples on the island are in extremely good condition, recently
renovated, with yellow-ochre walls offsetting the deep green of the mature trees
in their forecourts. They're squarely geared up for tourism, each charging
around ¥8 to get in, though they are also frequented by plenty of pilgrims too.
As well as temples, two caves are firmly on the pilgrim circuit and there are
even a couple of beaches .
The two temples in the northern half of the island are conveniently connected
to the southern half by minibuses, which depart from the bus stop just southeast
of the central square in the town; there are minibuses between the temples as
well. The best way to get around, however, is to walk; you can do the two halves
of the island in two days.
