Clothes and shoes
Sartorial elegance is something of a local obsession, and there's an old Chinese
joke that Shanghai men would rather have oil for their hair than their wok. So
you're spoilt for choice if you're looking for some gladrags. Name brands and
chain stores will cost the same as at home or more but there's a surfeit of great
local shops and designers , and getting something tailor-made is a bargain.
Always try prospective purchases on as a Chinese extra-large size is equivalent
to a Western medium. Shops don't usually stock anything much bigger than
that, and no shoes bigger than a (male) British size ten (US size 10.5), so if
you're looking for larger sizes you'll have to get something custom-made or
head for one of the fake markets.
If you're after high street fashions , try Raffles Mall, Nanjing Dong Lu or
Huaihai Lu; if you just want something cheap and smart looking head for a
Giordano or a Uniqlo (there are branches of both at the eastern end of Nanjing
Dong Lu).
For kids' clothes , as well as the recommendations below check out the
underground Nihong Children's Clothing Market, on Pu'an Lu at the junction
with Jinling Lu ( 霓虹儿童广场 ; ní hóng ér tóng gu ng ch
; Huangpi Nan Lu

playground where you can leave the little darlings (¥15) and you can get a fancy
dress costume and a sweater for your dog while you're at it.
