155 Zhongshan Dong Yi Lu, at the intersection
with Jinling Dong Lu. The decor is undistin-
guished at this friendly Bund bar, but it's
also cheaper and has less attitude than any
of the more glamorous venues over the
road, making it popular with foreign
students, teachers and backpackers.
Tuesday is ladies' night; Saturday is a ¥100
open bar. Beers from ¥30.
Peace Hotel Jazz Bar
Junction of The Bund and Nanjing Dong Lu. A
cavernous pub inside the north building of
the Peace Hotel, famous for its eight-piece
dance band whose original members
played here in the 1930s, suffered perse-
cution during the Cultural Revolution, then
re-emerged in the twilight of their years to
fame and fortune. Their younger succes-
sors now play stately instrumental versions
of Fats Domino and Elvis Presley
standards, while portly tourists swirl to the
nostalgic rhythms and sip cocktails amid
the original 1930s decor. Cover charge
¥60.
Face Bar
Building Four, Ruijin Hotel, 118 Ruijin Er
Lu. The most civilized bar in Shanghai,
largely thanks to the venue, a lovely old villa
in the manicured grounds of the Ruijin Hotel.
It's quiet, the lighting is low, the decor is
opium den chic and the crowd is smart,
casual and loaded. Cocktails ¥65, happy
hour 5-8pm. A great place to take a date
on a summer evening.

207 Maoming Nan Lu, by Fuxing Zhong Lu. A
cultivated frog among the sleazy toads of
Maoming Lu (so no overfriendly bar girls)
that won't leave you feeling the need for a
shower. Offers a good Western food list, an
intimate upstairs lounge and a talkative
crowd.
British Bulldog
1 Wulumuqi Nan Lu, near Hengshan Lu. A
pastiche British boozer, all wood and brass,
with McEwans on draught and bangers and
mash on the menu. The kitchen stays open
till 2am.

club with none of that bristling Shanghai
attitude. Music gets going at 9.30pm, a bit
later at weekends.
