stop for anyone doing the sights in People's
Square. It also functions as a bar and a
restaurant but we're calling it a café as
that's what it does best. Relax over a drink,
smoke a hookah and admire the view of the
skyscrapers over the treetops, but don't eat
here as the food is overpriced.

Building 3, Ruijin Hotel, 118 Ruijin Er Lu.
8.30am-1am. A refined venue in the garden
of the Ruijin Hotel (seel p.109), light and airy
with big bay windows. Though there's not
much that's Art Deco about it, it does have
agreeable outdoor seating by a lawn.
Coffee ¥25.

7am-7pm. This handy branch of the popular
chain (see p.113), inside an office block
south of Fuzhou Lu, is a good place for a
light lunch. They also do free delivery.

Hengshan Moller Villa, 30 Shaanxi Nan Lu,
just north of Julu Lu. 8am-10pm. This branch
of the excellent Italian chain (see p.113)
has a lovely terrace. You won't mind
paying ¥25 for a coffee with a view like
this, of lush gardens and Gothic towers
(see p.76) that seems straight out of a
fairy tale.

88 Xinle Lu; 57 Fuxing Xi Lu. 9am-1am. Artsy,
laid-back little cafés with free WiFi. Writing a
business plan on an Apple Mac is not
mandatory but would certainly help you fit
in with this international hipster crowd. The
paintings and photos are all for sale.
Afternoon tea is ¥28 and the tuna melt
sandwich ¥38. One of the best Old French
Concession pit stops.
Citizen Bar and Café
天台餐厅

222 Jinxian Lu T 62581620. 11am-1am. A
great Continental-style café tucked away in
an elegantly gentrified neighbourhood. It's
very popular with French expats - perhaps
because of the good coffee, free WiFi and
the limitless potential for people watching
from the balcony. It's a good brunch place
too, with a wide choice of bar snacks, and
a very civilized venue for a pre-dinner
cocktail or a slice of apple pie.
Ginger Café

299 Fuxing Xi Lu (between Huashan Lu and
Gaoyou Lu). 9am-11pm. An amiable place
hidden away at the edge of the Old French
Concession, with home-made cakes and
plenty of books for whiling away an
afternoon. There's free WiFi and - uniquely
for Shanghai - it's all non-smoking.

food restaurant behind Xintiandi, with rather
better fare than you'll get there and none of
the froufrou. Dishes are light, low on salt
and cheap, with good burgers (¥38) and
smoothies, including a hangover special
(¥35). Good Western breakfast menu. Free

439 Wukang Lu, on the corner with Huaihai
Zhong Lu. 10.30am-2am. Situated in a striking
flatiron building at the western end of the
Old French Concession, this stylish café is
well loved by the media set - you'll hear
more ciaos than ni haos. Good burgers
(¥40), cheesecake (¥25) and smoothies
(¥35), and the tenderloin steak has a rare
reputation (¥70). Design magazines lie
around and there's free wireless Internet. It's
more like a bar at night, with a good range
of European beers.
