design, a familiar Shanghai east-west fusion
style, light and airy, and the second floor
restaurant is managed by Italian celebrity
chef Salvatore Cuomo. There are two
penthouse suites, a gym and spa, and every
room has a small kitchen. The rooftop bar
will no doubt become one of the city's
hotspots soon. The overall feel is like a
private members club for fashionistas. 9

floors of the magnificent Jinmao Tower, the
Hyatt is the world's tallest hotel, with, corre-
spondingly, the world's longest laundry
chute and its highest bar, Cloud Nine (see
p.126). Rooms are undistinguished but, with
floor to ceiling windows, are all about the
view, so pay a little extra to go as high as
you can (get one overlooking the Bund,
preferably on a corner) and reserve long in
advance. Spacious bathrooms, all glass and
mirrors, are designed so that you can even
get your fix on the clouds from the tub.
There's no doubt, the place is fantastic -
great design, lots of lucky numbers (see
p.90) as well as awesome views - but, it has
to be said, the area is hardly interesting.
Never mind, you might not want to leave the
hotel anyway. 9

- which will either be a roaring success or a
ghost town by the time your read this - this
is the most boutiquey of the new small
hotels. It's in the far north of Jing'an, by
Suzhou Creek, close to hip hangout
Moganshan art district, and set in spacious
gardens so that the proles in this grimy
industrial area are out of sight. Most of the
24 rooms overlook the river and have been
designed in a funkily ostentatious style. 7 - 9

this is the mother ship of business hotels. The
underwhelming entrance resembles an
underground car park but leads to a luxurious
foyer. Rooms are crisply modern with Chinese
motifs in the fittings and wooden sliding panel
doors. There's a health club, two swimming
pools, tennis and squash courts and a gym,
and expat complex the Shanghai Centre next
door has good cafés (including a branch of
Element Fresh, see p.114), bars and restau-
rants. It's a good choice if you want to be at
the centre of the action and don't need a
view. Big discounts off the rack rate are
generally available at reception. 9

Pudong, with almost a thousand rooms, is
popular with upscale business travellers for
comfort, convenience and of course, the
views through its huge windows. Classy,
with discreet Chinese motifs in the decor,
it's not overly corporate, which makes up for
the time it takes to get across the river. It's
worth upgrading for a Bund view. Spacious

it's well designed with a vivid colour scheme
