South and west:
Xujiahui and beyond
S
hanghai stretches westward for miles and miles, but it's not a zone that
need bother the sightseer particularly. Xujiahui , on the edge of the Old
French Concession, and Hongqiao beyond, are modern residential
areas where the most talked-about landmark is the IKEA superstore.
The suburbs are home to a great many expats, and services are geared towards
fulfilling their needs. But as well as malls, freeways and gated communities
there are a few places to visit, though sights are too distant from one another
to walk between. The main attractions are the rambling old Longhua Temple
in the southwest, and the Wanguo Cemetery and the zoo in the far west.
Xujiahui and Longhua
The Xujiahui subway pitches you right into the thick of things. You come out
into the five-storey Grand Gateway mega-mall, t hen when you've found your
way out, emerge at the giant intersection of Hongqiao Lu, Huashan Lu, Zhaojia-
bang Lu and Caoxi Bei Lu, where you're confronted with another five giant malls
(see box, p.136). It's easy to feel overwhelmed by a surfeit of neon and concrete,
but fortunately just around the corner there's a rather nice cathedral, St Ignatius ,
