Organ Grinders
As you walk along a bustling
street in Centro you will notice a
sound that rises above the
various noises of the city. It is the
music played by organ grinders
hand-cranking old German-made
organs. Dressed in beige
uniforms they work in teams of
two, one turning the crank to
produce the music, as the other
collects their day's earnings.

Built between 1905 and
1934, this stunning performing
arts venue presents a fascinating
blend of architectural styles. The
dazzling Beaux Arts white Italian
marble exterior features ornate
domes, columns, and European
sculptures and carvings. The
interior is a superb Art Deco
extravaganza, with red marble
columns, black marble floors,
classic light fixtures, and brass
details. Four stories of Art Deco
columns, balconies, and grillwork
house a spectacular theater,
famous murals, fine gift and
book shops, and traveling art

Fabulous decorative arts
from the 16th through 19th
century are displayed in this
former hospital building built in
the 18th century. The features of
the old building, the archways,
carved wood doors, and frescos,
have been incorporated into the
design of the display areas which
tastefully augment the collection
of beautiful everyday decorative
objects from Mexico, Europe,

Built as a small Jesuit college in
1588, today the building is perhaps
best known as the birthplace of
the modern muralist movement.
Diego Rivera painted
his first mural, The
Creation, here in 1922-3.
The walls inside have
works of early muralists
including David Alfaro
Siqueiros, José Clem-
ente Orozco, and

^ Parque Alameda Central
The oldest park in the city
was established on the site of an
Aztec market by the order of
Viceroy Don Luis de
Velasco in 1590. It was
named after the poplar
trees planted there. With
shade-giving trees and
walking paths, the park
provides some tranquil
respite from the bustle of
the city. Fountains and
statues adorn the park,
including a bronze figure
of Neptune, God of the
