! New Year's Day (Jan 1)
The Day of the Dead in
Mexico is a two day celebration
to honor deceased relatives and
ancestors. Families invite the
dead to visit by creating
elaborate altars decorated with
candy skulls, flowers, and the
favorite foods of the departed. It
is believed that deceased
children return on November 1st.
The next day the dead adult
relatives and ancestors visit.
( Día de Nuestra Señora de
December 31 sees parties
all night. Traditionally, colored
eggshells filled with confetti
are tossed into the air.

Thousands time their arrival for
December 12, the Feast Day of
the Virgin of Guadalupe, to
attend the mass and thank the
Virgin. Pilgrims often complete
their journey to the Villa de
Guadalupe on their knees.
Good Friday
Holy Thursday (March/April) is
a traditional day of worship at
churches. Passion Plays are
held on Good Friday.

Parades by workers are
held in the streets.

Battle of Puebla, where the
Mexican army defeated the

On the evening before, the
President issues the cry of

Freedom Bell at the Zócalo. A

on this day.

Feast Day celebrations, Villa de Guadalupe

Christmas processions and
plays re-enacting the story of
Mary and Joseph seeking lodging
and the nativity scene are nightly
events throughout the city in the
days leading up to Christmas,
December 16-24. Candle- and
lantern-lit processions fill the
streets heading to churches for
mass. The Zócalo is decorated
with lights and major performance
venues hold special events.
