In the mountains, southwest

offer a variety of hiking trails.

One of the best places for
bird watching is Xochimilco (see

and in the Parque Ecologico de
Xochimilco. The pine and oak
forests at Parque Nacional
Desierto de los Leones (see p96)
yields different species, including
the lovely bright Red Warbler.
^ Hot-Air Balloons and
There are many mountain-
bike trails near Mexico City. Some
of the most accessible are at San
Nicolás Totolapan. It offers about
93 miles (150 km) of dirt trails at
altitudes between 8,900 ft
(2,700m) and 12,000 ft (3,740m).

horseback riding on weekends
and holidays. Local horse owners
