In 1922, to heal political wounds
through art, young artists such
as Rivera, Siqueiros, and Orozco,
were hired to paint murals on
the walls of the school. However,
some citizens did not agree with
their leftist ideals (see p68) .
One of José Clemente
Orozco's best known murals, the
1925 Omniciencia , adorns the
staircase of this building, now a
Sanborns restaurant. One of his
earlier works, it is painted in
subdued tones of gold and
brown (see p44) .

Diego Rivera painted more than
100 murals on three floors of this
building between 1923 and 1928.
It is the best place in the city to
view his murals. See Day of the
Dead in the second patio on the
first floor and his self-portrait in
the stairwell leading to the
fourth floor. d República de Argentina

David Alfaro Siqueiros' huge
murals cover the exterior and
interior walls of this ultra-modern
12-sided cultural center. In the
main hall on the fourth floor is
his masterpiece, the monumen-
tal, multi-dimensional La Marcha
de la Humanidad or The March
of Humanity (see p98) .

Excellent murals by highly res-
pected muralists decorate the
exteriors of several buildings. On
the Rectory Tower is Davíd Alfaro
Siqueiros' Alegoría de la Cultura .
The tiled frescos on four façades
of the Central Library building by
Juan O'Gorman depict 400 years
of Mexican history. Francisco
Eppens Helguera's mural on the
façade of the Medicine building
portrays pre-Hispanic themes. On
the Olympic Stadium is a high
relief mural about family, peace,
and sports by Diego Rivera.

On the first floor is the
Museo Nacional de Historia
which showcases excellent mur-
als featuring aspects of Mexican
history by famous muralists.
Juan O'Gorman's Retablo de la
Independencia , José Clemente
Orozco's mural of Benito Juárez,
and David Alfaro Siqueiros' satiric
image of Porfirio Díaz are a few
of the best ones (see p43) .
