In-Depth Information
& Museo Rufino Tamayo
( Templo Mayor
A fabulous collection of
modern art and sculpture by
internationally recognized artists
is housed in this dramatic con-
crete and white marble building
set in the woods of Bosque de
Chapultepec. The collection
features works by internationally
renowned artists Pablo Picasso,
Mark Rothko, Joan Miro,
Fernando Botero, Isamu Noguchi,
and many others. The museum
also plays host to world-class
traveling art exhibitions several
times a year (see p83).
The centerpiece of this
museum is the huge stone disk
depicting the dismembered moon
goddess Coyolxauhqui. The
accidental discovery of this
artifact triggered the massive
excavation of the ruins of the
Templo Mayor. Many of the
offerings left in the temples for
the gods are on display, including
delicate ceramic objects, human
skulls adorned with shell and flint,
and the decorated knives of flint
and obsidian that were used
during human sacrifices. Antiqui-
ties collected by the Aztecs from
earlier pre-Hispanic cities are also
displayed (see pp16-17) .
) Museo Nacional de
Historia
This museum has two sections -
the Alcázar and the Castillo. The
vast collections of the museum
are housed in the rooms of
Castillo de Chapultepec, the
former residence of Mexican
presidents. The fascinating
collections cover four centuries
and are arranged chronologically.
The Alcázar section is an
astonishing house-museum
which preserves the lavish
lifestyle of Mexico's leaders from
1864 to 1939. The Castillo
section offers a glimpse into the
turbulent history of Mexico
between the Spanish conquest
under Cortés and the Mexican
Revolution (see p83) .
Museo Rufino Tamayo
* Museo de Arte Carrillo Gil
The permanent collection
features paintings by early 20th-
century Mexican masters, with a
large number of oils by José
Clemente Orozco and David
Alfaro Siqueiros. These works
have amazing scope, including
portraits, still lifes, and political
subjects. Diego Rivera's cubist-
style, 1916-painting, El
Arquitecto, is here as well. The
museum is respected for its
exhibitions of contemporary
work by international and
Mexican artists (see p91) .
