smoke or fog or to translucent objects. However, its applicability to participating
media was soon discovered by the artists. Afterwards, the deep shadow map
method was added to the in-house production renderer and also to commercial
rendering software. It has since established itself as the most efficient method for
generating shadows in dense volumetric environments.
