In-Depth Information
the nonprofit Alabama Hiking Trail Society (AHTS) is
working hard to change that and move the trail off into
the woods.
A brand-new trail is being planned on the west side
of the state called the Alabama Trail (ALT). The ALT
will begin at historic Fort Morgan on Alabama's Gulf
Coast and wind its way 550 miles to the Tennessee
state line just east of Huntsville. The trail will take
hikers to all of the beautiful landscapes the state has to
offer and then some.
Currently the trail from Little River State Forest
(Hikes 13 and 14 ) to Tennessee is in the planning
stages. South of that to the Gulf of Mexico, the Gulf
Coast chapter of AHTS is working hard to complete
their 120-mile-long section of the trail. At one time
many hikers believed that there would never be wilder-
ness trails in this area since it's located in one of the
fastest-growing population areas in the state, but with
the help of the Alabama Forever Wild program and
many local municipalities and federal agencies, this
section is becoming a reality. Although it's still a work
in progress, that progress is moving along fast!
Some of the hikes in this topic that are part of the
Alabama Trail include Pine Beach Trail ( Hike 2 ) , Jeff
Friend / Centennial Trail ( Hike 3 ), Blue Trail ( Hike 6 ) ,
Splinter Hill Bog ( Hike 12 ) , Gazebo Trail ( Hike 13 ) , and
Bell/CCC Trail ( Hike 14 ) .
