In-Depth Information
The highlights of hiking the Cotton Bayou Trail include a wetland at mile 0.3 to
the south. During the summer months the wetland could be dried up, but fall
through early spring there is ample water to draw in the wildlife. White-tailed deer
are not uncommon, as are great blue herons searching the muddy waters for din-
ner. And keep your eye to the sky for hawks soaring above.
At mile 1.4 the Cotton Bayou Trail ends at the paved Catman Road Trail. Here
you will turn left (west) and follow the paved trail for 0.1 mile to the intersection
with the Rosemary Dunes Trail. Local folklore says that a half-man/half-cat
creature once roamed this area. I don't know if you will see the Catman when you
walk this section, but you will find some interesting things here.
The nature center on the Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail is the site of many nature- and outdoor-oriented
presentations.
