different hunting seasons start and end in the area in which you'll be hiking. Dur-
ing this time frame, be sure to wear at least a blaze orange hat, and possibly put an
orange vest over your pack. Don't be surprised to see hunters in camo outfits car-
rying bows or rifles around during their season. If you would feel more comfort-
able without hunters around, hike in national parks and monuments or state and
local parks where hunting is not allowed.

Whether you are going on a short hike in a familiar area or planning a weeklong
backpack trip, you should always be equipped with the proper navigational equip-
ment—at the very least a detailed map and a sturdy compass.
