In-Depth Information
Pass a CCC retaining wall on the opposite side of the runoff. In
250 feet come to a T intersection with the Rockpile Trail. Turn
left (southeast) onto the Rockpile Trail. In a few yards cross a
50-foot bridge over the runoff to the west and come to a Y. The
Loop Trail is to the left and leads back to the parking lot. Take
the right fork to the north and continue on the Rockpile Trail. In
50 feet Pickwick Lake and the Tennessee River will be in front
of you. The trail makes a left turn and heads up stairs.
0.3
Come to the top of the stairs and the overlook. Walk around the
left side of the building and pass another short stone structure.
In 150 feet come to another Y. Take the right fork to the southw-
est and continue on the Rockpile Trail. You will be walking
along a tall bluff.
0.4
Climb stairs uphill, with wildflowers lining the trail in season. In
200 feet a trail enters from the left (south). Continue straight
(west). This is now the Southport Trail (a sign shows the way).
There are nice lake views to your right.
0.5
A good view of the lake and the city of Florence as you walk
under a power line. The trail is thick grass here with wild-
flowers. In less than 0.1 mile, climb down stairs (about 100
feet).
0.6
Come to the paved Reservation Road. Turn right onto the road
to the southwest.
0.7
Pass a bench on the left. The Southport Historical Trail enters
the woods to the right of the bench (you'll return to this point
later). Continue south on the paved road.
0.8
Come to picnic tables on the right. There is a wide cut through
the woods that leads uphill. Turn right (west) and follow the cut
uphill.
