tablished voice. The answer was the Alabama Trails
Commission.
Where there is intense development, there tends to
be intense overlap of purpose. The Alabama Trails
Commission was established to foster communication
among all the trail constituents to balance their efforts
wisely and in chosen directions—an initiative to replace
the scattershot approach that had previously seen un-
coordinated approaches wither and disappear. The
commission has given unification to all of Alabama's
trail stakeholders.
Since its inception, the commission has mapped out
and pursued a path toward a realm of large-scale pro-
jects impossible until now. It has begun an initiative to
create a web-based portal for the various trail stake-
holders in the state; it has held meetings of the
Alabama Trails Conference; it has identified a roster of
must-do initiatives to make Alabama's standing com-
mensurate with its natural resources; and it has cre-
ated a funding arm to sustain its endeavors.
The Alabama Trails Commission is a vital effort to in-
stitutionalize best practices in the establishment of
Alabama trails, the distribution of information about its
endeavors, and the means to support such important
ventures in the long term.
