In-Depth Information
The West Fork of Little River rushes by the trail.
Almost 0.5 mile into the trip, the trail splits off onto the yellow-blazed DST for
a short trek to an old trail shelter built by the CCC in the 1930s. The shelter is
perched high atop a bluff overlooking West Fork of Little River's gorge. It is a
beautiful view and a great place to just sit and relax in the shade of the building.
The best views come late fall through winter when the foliage is down.
From here the trail heads back to the intersection with the Pool Loop Trail and
follows the yellow blazes downhill to just above the river. You will have great
views of the river gorge and rapids below, and at about 1 mile into the walk, you
will come to Indian Falls. When the water is flowing, this is an impressive 50-foot
cascade. There are two short side trails you can take here to view the waterfall.
You can either head downhill about 200 feet or so to the river's edge and view the
falls from the bottom up, or walk straight ahead 50 feet to stand next to the falls
and the rock shelter it has created. Either way, be very careful on the slippery
rocks.
