winding down from a beautiful mountain vista called “The Point” into a canyon
carved by the weather and the preserve's namesake creek. No matter what trail
you take, you will be treated to towering rock bluffs, deep rock shelters, and
amazing tumbling waterfalls. And wildflowers run rampant here.
Then there is the Sipsey Wilderness, 25,000 acres of forest tucked away in
Bankhead National Forest. The Borden Creek Trail is one of the best trails to in-
troduce you and your family to hiking in the “Land of a Thousand Waterfalls.”
Along this 2.8-mile-long point-to-point hike (or 5.6 miles out and back), you will
encounter rock shelters, bluffs, waterfalls, and a cave, the “Fat Man's Squeeze,”
that you have to make your way through.
History will probably remember this region most for the Marshall Space Flight
Center. This site, along with the nearby Redstone Arsenal, played a key role in
sending Americans to the moon. It was here that Wernher von Braun and NASA
engineers developed the Saturn V rocket that would put Apollo astronauts on the
moon. Today the center is used by NASA to test and assemble parts of the new
Space Launch System (SLS) that will take us out into deep space. This is also
home to one of the nation's space camps for both children and adults. The mu-
seum and guided tours at the Space and Rocket Center are a must-see when in the
area.
